MEDICAL SPANISH CME COURSES IN LA PAZ AND ACAPULCO, MEXICO |
RIOS ASSOCIATES has been successfully presenting its Intensive Medical Spanish Language and Cultural Workshops for CME credit throughout the United States since 1983 for Doctors, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, LPNs and Medical Personnel. The
Workshops and materials are expressly designed for the Health Care Professional. Ríos Associate courses, unlike the majority of the Medical Spanish courses offered today, are not merely conversational Spanish with a "Medical Component" consisting of some medical terms and vocabulary. Their courses are expressly and exclusively "Medical Spanish and Cultural Competency and Sensitivity Courses" whose materials are written and designed for the Health Care Professionals' immediate practical application with their patients. |

These 8 day course, sponsored by The University of Arizona, College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center, is an intensive, individually tailored conversational and medical Spanish Workshop consisting of medical dialogues, role-plays, many colorful visual aids cross-cultural discussions, "edutainment", daily practice and evening study with a Text work-book and 10 corresponding CDs. These strategies strengthen the participants' abilities to meet the program's learning objectives. |
The course curriculum provides for over 70 hours of total immersion learning. This approach has repeatedly proven to be extremely suitable for those with limited time, and who must use their new language skills immediately with their Spanish-speaking patients, affording a better understanding of cross-cultural communication and more cultural competency. Learning Objectives:
Participants who complete the course will:
a) Acquire the ability to interview patients in Spanish,
take a medical history, conduct a physical examination, give prescription and follow-up instructions and intervene with medical emergencies.

b) Recognize a Spanish vocabulary of 2,000 to 3,000 general and medical terms.
c) Develop a good flow of speech in present, future, and past tenses, as well as the command form.
d) Obtain some degree of Cultural Competency concerning time, personal space, family dynamics, foods, health and particularly medical care.
e) Utilize the skills necessary to continue language acquisition through daily practice and personal experience.
Intermediate/Advanced students will be able to do all of the above with more facility and fluency utilizing more idiomatic expressions, complex tenses (conditional, present & past progressive, present & past perfect tenses), as well as the subjunctive mood and its various tenses. |
